How Parents for Transparency is structured and funded

Parents for Transparency is published by a Florida limited liability company. Its two members are its founders, Amber Cebull and Ali Olivo. There is no board and there are no other owners.

Why an LLC and not a nonprofit?

Ali Olivo: “The most important thing in this process was that we keep special interests out of this entire situation. We do not ever want this organization in any way to be influenced by external people that have lots of money, that are maybe donating to it, that are giving it grants. We want to be able to say what we want to say.”

Amber Cebull: “The structure allows you to have a board that can effectively push you out of your own cause.”

How is it funded?

Amber Cebull: “The most profitable, cause-driven organizations that are also the most successful ones are membership-driven. Examples being Consumer Reports… they’re membership-based and they’re also cause-driven.”

Amber Cebull: “It’s going to be small contributions for people… just contributing with memberships.”

Parents for Transparency accepts no money from candidates, political parties, campaigns, or political committees. Ever. Memberships are not open yet. When they are, they will be listed on the About page.

Does a for-profit structure create a conflict?

Ali Olivo: “The way that organizations are structured have nothing to do with the corruption that can happen. It doesn’t have to do with the type of organization or structure, it has to do with the people that are in charge of it.”
